The blue whale, which is the largest animal on Earth, can reach lengths of up to 100 feet (30 meters) and weigh up to 200 tons. Despite their massive size, blue whales exclusively feed on tiny shrimp-like animals called krill, consuming up to 4 tons of krill in a single day. They have a unique feeding method known as “lunge feeding,” in which they open their mouths wide and engulf both krill and seawater. As they push the water out, their baleen plates filter out the krill, allowing them to swallow their prey. These incredible creatures can also produce the loudest sound of any animal, with their calls reaching volumes of up to 188 decibels – louder than a jet engine!
