The Unconventional Beginnings of Post-it Notes

Jul 30, 2023 | Science and Technology

Post-it Notes were invented by Spencer Silver, a scientist at 3M, in 1968 while attempting to create a super-strong adhesive. However, his creation turned out to be a weak adhesive with low sticking power. Years later, another 3M scientist named Art Fry, looking for a bookmark solution for his choir hymnal, remembered Silver’s adhesive and realized its potential. The result was the iconic Post-it Notes, combining a repositionable, low-tack adhesive with small pieces of paper. Introduced to the market in the 1980s, Post-it Notes became an instant success and transformed the way people communicate and organize their daily lives.
