Fact: The first human-made object to reach space was the V-2 rocket launched on June 20, 1944, by Germany during World War II. The V-2, designed by Wernher von Braun, was the world’s first long-range guided ballistic missile. It reached an altitude of 189 kilometers (118 miles), crossing the Kármán line, the boundary between Earth’s atmosphere and space. Although originally developed for military purposes, the V-2 rocket’s milestone marked the beginning of space exploration and laid the foundation for future space missions, leading to humanity’s eventual journey to the moon and beyond.
